Municipal Alcohol Development

RISK helps municipalities to develop a comprehensive alcohol management policy in their area. The process follows the guidelines offered in "The Municipal Alcohol Policy Guide" created by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and distributed by the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association. Smart Serve

RISK offers Smart Serve course to municipalities, service clubs and high schools in Muskoka-Parry Sound in order increase the knowledge of safe serving practices and low-risk drinking guidelines. For more information on Smart Serve, visit their website.

Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines / Chronic Disease Prevention Communication Campaign

RISK, in partnership with the FOCUS Resource Centre, has developed a communications campaign to raise awareness of Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines. Information on Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines can be found at their website and at the Alcohol Policy Network.

  • Two newspaper ads were part of this campaign. Ad #1 Ad# 2
  • Radio ads were also aired.
  • Bookmarks, pamphlets, table-tents and coasters were also distributed.
  • A display was created and can be borrowed by workplaces, agencies or service clubs. Contact the RISK Coordinator if you wish to have additional copies of the documents or to borrow the display.
  • The Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention team of the Muskoka-Parry Sound Health Unit supplemented this campaign by developing a brochure and a poster to make people aware of the link between alcohol and breast cancer. Both are in pdf format. Another brochure on the link between alcohol and strokes was also produced.

Safe Snowmobiling Communications Campaign

RISK did s safe snowmobiling campaign through the winter of 2005. OPP Officers and MNR Conservation Officers distributed "safe snowmobiling kits" during their routine checks. The campaign was completmented by posters and media releases. The kits contained the following:

 

Safer Bars Program

Two Safer Bars workshops have been offered in the area this year. Safer Bars is a training program developed by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) to help staff handle problem situations in bars in order to reduce aggression and injury. The program is delivered by trainers from the Ontario Tourism & Education Corporation (OTEC). For more information on Safer Bars, click here.

At the training sessions, the participants had a lot of fun learning ways to diffuse conflicts.
