Healthy Choices = Healthy People

Who Are We?

The Wawa Healthy Lifestyles Coalition is a community based organization working in partnerships toward a healthier community. We support the Healthy Communities definition of community to include health, social, economical, spiritual and environmental well-being for all community members.

How?

By mobilizing the community to promote awareness and education on the risk factors related to alcohol, substance abuse and injury prevention.

Why?

To enable the residents of Wawa and area to increase control over and to improve their physical, mental and social well being.

Mission Statement

To improve the quality of Life of the community by promoting health choices.

Goals

  • To improve the physical, psychological, social and spiritual health of Wawa and area residents by promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
  • to increase the level of awareness regarding the risks, including the risk of injuries, associated with alcohol and other drug abuse and their consequences.
  • To have a positive effect on the actual consumption of alcohol by reducing alcohol consumption in high risk groups and preventing low risk drinkers from developing high risk habits

Sub-committees

Sober Driver Committee

The Sober Driver Committee promotes awareness and education on the issue of alcohol use related to drinking and driving.

The Committee works in partnership with the Township of Michipicoten Police Department, Wawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, Wawa Sno-Riders, O.S.A.I.D., and local business representatives.

The Committee promotes the "Thank you for being a Sober Driver/Snowmobiler/ Boater" Program, Red Ribbon Campaigns, Designated Driver Program and school education programs.

The Drug Awareness Committee

The Drug Awareness Committee works to achieve the following goals:

  • To increase public knowledge and awareness about the use of alcohol and drugs and their effects on the community.
  • To improve teen leadership skills through the development of projects with substance abuse prevention messages.
  • To increase student activities dealing with self-esteem, empowerment and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • To promote healthier lifestyles by promoting family activities that are alcohol/smoke-free.
  • To encourage people to improve personal wellness and to make healthy lifestyle choices

Alcohol Policy Committee

Addresses policy development and revisions, which provide the responsible management of alcohol in facilities, owned and operated by the municipality.

The Committee also assists local licensed establishments in developing "House Policies".

Workshop Committee

The Workshop Committee provides educational opportunities using the community development process while focusing on the health risks related to drugs and alcohol.

Smart Serve Training Program

This program delivers responsible service training to individuals who serve alcoholic beverages or work where alcoholic beverages are sold and served in the province of Ontario.

In partnership with the Algoma Health Unit, CHADWIC Home, Superior Children's Centre, Michipicoten Township Police Services, Wawa Detachement of the Ontario Provincial Police, Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving, Wawa Native Network, Liquor Control Board of Ontario, Aboriginal Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Initiative Program, local elementary and secondary schools and Michipicoten First Nations.

Placemats

  • The Wawa Healthy Lifestyles Coalition, Sober Driver Committee distributes placemats to local restaurants during the Christmas/Holiday season in December, the Wawa lake Trout Ice Fishing Derby in March, and at the Wawa Salmon Derby in August.

Daily Survival Kits

  • The daily survival kit was a fun packet of goodies that was handed out to new graduates. The kit includes a list of the contents with the meaning behind each item and how it is to remind the grad of a tip for everyday survival.

Hosting Kits

  • Hosting Kits for the holiday season. The kits were distributed at LCBO, The Beer Store, local grocery stores and R.I.D.E. programs.
