Goal

The goal of the FOCUS Community Project is to promote a healthier and safer community in the Sudbury area by helping to reduce the consumption of alcohol and illegal use of drugs to prevent problems and injuries related to alcohol and drug use.

Mission

To raise awareness in our community about the harmful effects of alcohol/drugs use and injuries related to substance abuse.

Local Objectives

  1. To support/create a cross-generational peer support and peer mentorship outreach program
  2. To develop and promote educational programs and activities to meet the cultural uniqueness within the City of Sudbury.
  3. To develop and increase the acceptance of accessible healthy community alternatives and activities.
  4. To lobby all levels of government to create a safer community through public policy.
  5. To encourage research that identifies high-risk problem areas.
  6. To support and increase the acceptance of existing programs that reduce the use of alcohol and other drugs and related injuries.
  7. To increase the Sudbury FOCUS Community Project's profile.
  8. To create an information clearing house

Provincial Objectives

Programming:

  1. To increase the number of effective initiatives to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse, including the prevention of injuries associated with the inappropriate use of alcohol and other drugs.(To reduce the rate by 20% by the year 2000, including death)
  2. To increase the number of effective initiatives to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse among youth.
  3. To increase the number of effective initiatives using a combination of approaches (awareness, education, policy and environmental support)
  4. To increase the number of effective alcohol and other drug abuse prevention initiatives in key settings(workplace, school, etc)
  5. To increase the number of people reached by these alcohol and other drug abuse prevention initiatives.
  6. To reduce the rate of injuries caused by cycling crashes and motorized vehicle crashes.
  7. To reduce the percentage of the adult population who drink more than two drinks per day by 20% by the year 2010.
  8. To reduce the rate of illicit substance use and non-medical use of drugs and of other psychoactive substances by 20% by the year 2010.

Knowledge:

  1. To increase the level of awareness regarding the risks, including the risk of injuries, associated with alcohol and other drug abuse and their consequences.
  2. To increase the level of knowledge of low-risk drinking practices.
  3. To increase the level of knowledge of appropriate actions to prevent injuries associated with alcohol and other drug abuse.

Behaviour:

  1. To reduce the proportion of youth (12-19 years old) who consume alcohol at least once a week.
  2. To reduce the proportion of adult women and men who consume alcohol at levels that places them at risk for alcohol and other drug-related injuries.
  3. To reduce the rate of alcohol-related injuries or deaths.
  4. To reduce the proportion of licensed drivers that report driving after consuming at least 2 drinks in the previous hour.
  5. To reduce the proportion of illicit drug use.

    The Sudbury FOCUS Community Project has over 30 community partners. These dedicated professionals and volunteers provide over 50 programs to promote the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse.
