It
was not surprising to find that, according to the youth, the major cause
of drug and alcohol misuse/abuse was peer pressure.
Adolescence is the stage of development where one's peer group has the
most influence. They stated that many youth do drugs or drink to fit
in, gain popularity, or to be cool. Others stated that family
and the media also contributed to the problem. Youth also felt
that drugs and alcohol were used as a coping mechanism, mentioning that
these substances are used/abuse to feel better and to
take your mind off problems. Youth stated that some people use/abuse
drugs and alcohol because they are having difficulty
at home or at school. They don't have support and they don't
feel a sense of community unity. Another response to the question
of why youth use/abuse drugs and alcohol revolved around the idea of
experimentation. Youth stated that drugs
and alcohol are used due to curiosity or
for the high. They stated that youth enjoy
the rush, or adventure of experimenting. "Living
on the Edge". They also stated that you use/abuse drugs and alcohol
for something to do.
The largest response to this question involved the negative affects
of drug and alcohol use/abuse. Youth stated that the abuse/misuse of
drugs and alcohol will lead to addiction and to violence. They felt
that this misuse takes control of your life and actions, can cause serious
injuries. Someone under the influence could not only risk harming themselves,
but others as well.
