Family Alchohol and Drug Use Policy

Every family has rules about alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. Some rules are stated clearly, such as "no smoking in the house" or "no drinking and driving". Sometimes rules are just understood, for example, a family does not allow the use of hard drugs, but alcohol is okay. This brochure is a tool that health promoters can provide to families. It follows a step by step format, giving parents and families the means to begin discussing the rules that they want for their home and family members and to adopt a family policy. Built in checklists allow for members to pick and choose the issues and solutions that the family wants to address. The final result is an individualized family policy.

Marina Alcohol Policy

Most boaters do not know the Ontario laws and fines that pertain to alcohol and boating, nor are they aware of the federal criminal code penalties for operating a boat while impaired. To educate the boating public about these laws and penalties, the Renfrew FOCUS Community Project has developed two public education products that are being distributed. The first is a safe boaters kit. It contains useful, factual pertinent information. The OPP are handing out the kits when they do boat inspections.

The second item is a marina alcohol policy. The policy, whose link appears below, is a statement about a marina's intention to encourage boaters who use their docking facilities to respect alcohol and boating law. It also informs boat dock users at the marina that staff will take reasonable steps to prevent drinking and driving boats or other vehicles notably cars/trucks.

Ideally, the marina manager(s) would take the sample policy and adapt it to their needs and specific conditions. They could post the policy in prominent locations in the dock vicinity or hand out copies to dock renters, whether they are occasional or seasonal users.

Friends of Renfrew FOCUS are invited to use the draft policy in their communities.

To Serve or not to Serve: Bar House Policies

In Renfrew County, following a workshop series, developed and implemented in Renfrew County by the Renfrew County FOCUS Community Project, and with consultative support from the CAMH consultant, several establishments have chosen to draft and implement bar policies. For a descritption of the procedures, as well as examples of actual bar and restaurant policies, click on the title above. Examples include: House policies for patrons, 4 House policies for staff, and a House policy for SOP (Special Occasion Permit) permit holders.

Party Smart

Renfrew County District FOCUS has developed Party Smart Manual a guide for how to host safe parties and events.

STAY SAFE at Work

The STAY SAFE at Work display was developed as an initiative that would reduce injuries and problems resulting from alcohol and drug use at the work site. Several FOCUS partners were involved on the committees that created the messages. We decided to target the workplace in an effort to reach both employees and parents. The display components have been produced in a large format to fit our 8' x 10' display stand, and in a smaller format to be posted on bulletin boards at work sites.

When the display is in use, CAMH information pamphlets on cannabis, cocaine, and alcohol are distributed. Visitors to the display are asked to complete the "Workplace Alcohol/Drug Use Quiz." The quiz in designed to learn about drug use at work, whether or not people think a Workplace Alcohol Policy should be developed and to evaluate the display.

So far, people have responded positively. We are hoping to be able to use the responses to the quiz to encourage employers to develop a Workplace Alcohol Policy.

The Workplace Alcohol/Drug Use Quiz Results are available for review.
