Where did the idea of The Safe Grad Guide Come From?
The Safe Grad Committee of North Bay and Area
has been working together for a number of years to reduce
risks and injuries caused by alcohol and other drug use at
graduation parties. This resource is a product of many hours
of conversations with high school students to assist graduation
committees with the planning and implementing of successful
and safe events, while acknowledging the risks taken at this
time of year.
Why a Grad Planning Guide?
Graduation committees are student leaders who
can influence the format and behaviours of grad events. The
Grad Guide provides them with a practical tool they can use
to plan safe grads and reduce alcohol and drug-related risk
behaviours through injury prevention. Students who become
impaired by alcohol, marijuana or other drugs are more likely
to sustain an injury or other health consequences. School
committees who plan formal graduation events may be held legally
liable for any harm or damage that occurs as a result of the
impairment of guests.
Who designed the Safe Grad Guide?
Our guide has been developed with local student
input to reflect specific needs pertinent to North Bay and
its neighbouring communities. We reviewed several other documents
with a number of students and committee members, and agreed
that the Ottawa High School Planning Guide was the closest
to what we wanted to model.
When is the Safe Grad Guide Used?
The Guide is a tool to be used throughout the
grad planning year, starting in the fall. This information
is for grad committees and teacher/parent advisors who plan
a high school grad event, and parents who host pre/post grad
parties.
